Campus Minister, Campus Protestant Ministries at Union College
Reports to: CPM Board of Directors
Start Date: August 1, 2019
Application Deadline: Applications submitted by May 1, 2019, will receive priority consideration. However, position remains open until filled.
Hours: 20 hours/week, 10 months/year
Compensation: In keeping with denominational guidelines
Mission Statement: We seek to
● Bring a progressive Christian perspective and practice to the Union College community while hosting an interfaith presence.
● Strengthen campus/community relation by connecting students and local congregations and providing opportunities for service and advocacy in collaboration with the Schenectady faith community.
● Provide opportunities for students and others to reflect on meaningful experiences and engage in meaningful conversations.
● Offer care and support for students and student communities.
Background: Campus Protestant Ministries has served the Union College community since 1981. CPM is an independent charitable religious organization that is spiritually and financially supported by local churches, denominational bodies, and individuals. It is governed by a board of directors that includes local church representatives as well as Union faculty and alumni.
Responsibilities: The Campus Minister, under guidance from the Board, directs the life and programs of the ministry. He/she provides pastoral counseling, leads programs and events, coaches student leaders, and sustains community life to support students at Union.
Specific responsibilities include:
Work with students (60%):
1) Accompany students exploring questions of justice, service, equity and spirituality. Student engagement may look like personal pastoral counseling and support, in crisis as well as in vocational exploration, spiritual growth, and community service efforts. Or it may look like “showing up” to support students finding their way to challenge questions of justice, equity, racism, and peace, on campus, in community and in national life.
2) Initiate and lead or guide students in leading events and gatherings to support faith formation and exploration including study groups, retreats, speaker events, service projects and interfaith groups and discussions. Through these programs, aspire to stimulate spiritual exploration and commitment to ministry and service.
3) Reach out to and serve students of all religious and non-religious backgrounds without trying to “convert” them to a particular theology. Make a special effort to contact students who are from church denominations represented by CPM and those who are drawn to a progressive Christian witness.
Work with the CPM Board and our supporters (30%):

Campus Pastor, The Chapel Akron Ohio
HISTORY & CURRENT STATUS
In January of 1934, about 40 people gathered to worship in the 5 Points area of Akron in Northeast Ohio. The church that resulted would be named “The Chapel” to signify a small and humble place where teaching was based solely on the basics of the Bible. Since that time, The Chapel has had a rich heritage of intentional and relational evangelism that has seen a significant impact in their surrounding communities and around the world through their extensive local and global outreach work. Over the years, explosive growth has led to the planting of several autonomous churches and in the last ten years the addition of four campuses in the greater Akron area.
Today, around 5,000 adults worship each weekend on their five campuses. The mission of The Chapel is to see every person Believing in Jesus, Belonging to Family, Becoming a Disciple, and Building His Kingdom. They are known for expositional preaching and for being a safe place for the broken and hurting. The Chapel takes seriously their responsibility to share the Truth with grace. They also have a strong reputation in their community for civic engagement and their efforts in racial reconciliation.
Senior Pastor Tim Armstrong came to The Chapel in 2014 and has brought compelling vision and strong leadership. The Chapel is experiencing renewed joy and energy and is poised for new heights of effectiveness in the years to come. They have a vision to plant 10 additional campuses over the next decade. While The Chapel is currently one church in five locations, “Akron” is the original campus and is headquarters. Weekend attendance at Akron is averaging 2600 so far in the 2018/2019 year (adults, kids, and online viewers).
The Chapel is non-denominational, evangelistic, and Bible loving. For additional information regarding their beliefs as a church (including white papers on certain theological distinctives) visit https://thechapel.life/webelieve/
Leadership
Across all of their campuses, The Chapel is a staff led church. The governance structure is that the pastors serve as the Elders who give spiritual leadership, set vision, and execute the ministry (while also equipping the saints to do the work of ministry!). Executive leadership for the whole church entity comes from Senior Pastor, Tim Armstrong and Executive Pastor Jim Mitchell.
The Chapel also has a Board of Trustees comprised of 12 laymen who provide oversight and accountability for the finances and property of The Church. This board also provides accountability for the Senior Pastor, but has no direct oversight of any other staff or ministries. Each of our campuses is led by a local Campus Pastor who preaches live, leads the staff at his location, and sets local strategy that gives unique, contextual expression to our overall shared vision. On the Akron campus, the staff is committed to leadership, each other, and the shared mission and vision. Executive leadership for the church comes from Senior Pastor Tim Armstrong and Executive Pastor Jim Mitchell.
Tim spent over 17 years as the church planter and pastor of Crossroads Church in Mansfield, OH when he felt God pulling him to become the Senior Pastor at The Chapel. In the middle of 2014, he and his family left the church they had planted years before in order to follow God’s direction to Akron. Tim embraces a leadership style that is directive but relational. He places a high value on independent decision-making, but also on a collaborative process ahead of decisions. Tim is a strong communicator with a conversational style and is an intuitive leader.
Jim Mitchell serves as the Executive Pastor and is the “right hand” to Pastor Tim. He has been in Ohio since 1991 and, prior to his current role, served for 24 years as the Worship Pastor at The Chapel. Jim is highly collaborative and empowering, seeking to remove obstacles so teammates can run hard after the vision.
The Chapel has a remarkable staff, dedicated to the mission, vision, and values that defines their culture. This is an exciting season of ministry and they are eager to add a called and gifted leader to help them reach and disciple university students in the Akron area. And together, they believe the time is now!
College Ministry Overview
For over 45 years and through various leaders, God has continued to faithfully use The Chapel’s College Ministry to reach students for Christ. In addition, the ministry has been a leadership development pipeline to raise up pastors, missionaries, Christian school teachers, and key lay leaders. They have also sent out a countless number of Christ–centered men and women into the business world to be salt and light and to spread the Good News of Christ wherever they go. Currently, the "Campus Focus" ministry model includes:
Challenge & Opportunity
The College Ministry at The Chapel has had a rich history over its 45+ years of existence. The Chapel highly values ministry to college age students and young adults – especially since it is located right next door to The University of Akron. The ministry is currently being led by a full-time assistant director who has been part of the ministry for several years as both an intern and then assistant director. In addition, there is a part-time administrative assistant, a stipended worship coordinator, and four interns who raise their own support. The previous College Pastor departed in September 2018 to move on to an executive pastor role as his next season of career ministry.
The College Pastor will join a ministry that is in transition, but has the very rich history described above. The Chapel is looking for an experienced expert in college ministry who can build on the history and current strengths to re-envision and potentially redesign a ministry model for college students centered around the following priorities:
Reformed view of salvation – especially God’s sovereignty in election/call and man’s total depravity.
Complementarian view of genders.
Expository preaching and teaching of the Scriptures.
Ecclesiology that sees the local church gathered for worship and edification, and then sent out to evangelize.
Orthodox view of biblical authority despite matters of drift in cultural morals, especially in matters of marriage and sexuality.
The Chapel desires to hire a College Pastor who will develop a culture of discipleship where students are growing and active in their faith. There is freedom here to be creative, to build, and to do ministry with a great team in a growing community of believers. This is a great place in which to raise a family, and an amazing church for people to belong to and thrive!

Almost 8,500 undergraduates study at the University’s main campus in Evanston. The University’s 3,300+ full-time faculty members range from MacArthur Fellowship recipients to Tony Award winners. In their ranks are members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and numerous other honorary and professional societies.

Religious and Spiritual Life
The primary mission of Religious and Spiritual Life is to support the quest for meaning and purpose through exploration, practice, and growth in our religiously diverse and inclusive communities.
Since the appointment of the first University Chaplain at Northwestern in 1946, the chaplaincy has undergone an evolution from Protestant Christian expression, reflecting the roots of its founding, to a Religious and Spiritual Life program that is responsive to the diversity of religious and spiritual traditions represented at the University. In its early iteration, the programmatic focus of the University Chaplain was to offer worship services, including excellent preaching and music; pastoral care and counseling; and teaching classes in religion. The gift of the Alice Millar Chapel and Parkes Hall in 1962 provided a setting for worship and programming befitting the Protestant Christian roots of the institution. In the mid-1990s a student group called the Northwestern University Council of Religions formed with the goal of promoting interfaith dialogue and engagement. Subsequently, interfaith living-learning residences and Associate Chaplains were hired from other religious and spiritual traditions to expand the program beyond its Protestant roots. Affiliated campus ministries were also established to support other religious and spiritual practices on campus. The programmatic reach of the current Religious and Spiritual Life program includes worship; musical events and concerts; pastoral care; social justice engagement; service to the campus and wider Evanston community; leadership in public discourse at the intersection of religion and society; and participation in University celebrations such as Baccalaureate and Commencement.
Role of the University Chaplain and Executive Director for Religious and Spiritual Life
This is a key moment of leadership transition and the new University Chaplain and Executive Director of Religious and Spiritual Life will play an important role in helping the University define the structure, role and place of the department in the lives of students, with faculty and staff at Northwestern, and within the Evanston and Chicago communities. The University is seeking in its new University Chaplain and Executive Director an individual who will bring energy, vision and focus for how to situate the chaplaincy and the department in a way that advances the university pillars: Discover, Integrate, Connect and Engage.
The responsibilities of the University Chaplain and Executive Director fall into three broad categories:
Providing Leadership for the Department of Religious and Spiritual Life
The University Chaplain and Executive Director will play a leadership role in guiding the department of Religious and Spiritual Life as it evaluates and implements the recommendations of the 2017-2018 Program Review. An important component of this work will be guiding the department through the development of a new vision and strategic planning process that articulate the place of Religious and Spiritual Life at the University.
The University Chaplain and Executive Director will bring management expertise to the unit and identify and implement strategies to ensure a collaborative working environment for staff, strengthen morale, and foster a culture of teamwork and mutual support.
The University Chaplain and Executive Director will actively cultivate strong and effective partnerships with Campus Religious Centers (Canterbury House, Hillel, Lutheran Campus Ministry, Sheil Catholic Center, and University Christian Ministry) as well as with the other departments within Student Affairs including Student Engagement: Campus Life (Fraternity and Sorority Life, Leadership Development and Community Engagement, and Student Organizations and Activities), Campus Inclusion and Community (Multicultural Student Affairs, Social Justice Education, and Student Enrichment Services). To be successful, these relationships, and others across the University, will require establishing clear expectations, effective communication, active engagement, and mutually beneficial alliances.
Overseeing Program Development, Implementation and Administration Working with the Religious and Spiritual Life team, the University Chaplain and Executive Director will develop interfaith and multifaith programming and implement a full range of community worship experiences for those who are religious, non-religious, and seeking meaning through spiritual exploration and practice. The University Chaplain and Executive Director works collaboratively with units across campus to develop activities and programs that effectively engage student, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members. The successful candidate will build upon the success of existing, well-regarded programs such as the worship services, the Alice Millar Choir, 40 Days, the Spirituality Reading Series, and Northwestern University Interfaith Initiatives to generate vibrant student engagement.
The University Chaplain and Executive Director will establish and maintain effective collaborative working relationships with student leaders, religious student organization advisors (of over 40 registered students clubs and organizations), Student Affairs, Academic Affairs, and campus service departments in order to provide a holistic and balanced student activity and involvement program that complements and supplements the mission of Student Engagement while advancing the mission of Religious and Spiritual Life. Providing Pastoral Care
The University Chaplain and Executive Director, along with chaplaincy staff, will be responsible for programming worship services in Millar and Vail Chapels, and for Jumu’ah, Friday prayers for the Muslim community. This will include writing and performing weekly worship services, assisting with music coordination, and, as needed, performing life events for congregation members, alumni, and campus community members.
The University Chaplain and Executive Director will provide pastoral care, support, and guidance to those who are in crisis or in need, and will serve as the primary after-hours oncall liaison for the University’s community of students, faculty, and staff. Also, coordination and participation of on-call crisis response is expected.
The University Chaplain and Executive Director officiates in, and provides support for, university-wide events, such as Convocations, Baccalaureate, and Commencement, and represents Religious and Spiritual Life on divisional and campus initiatives where appropriate, such as the Martin Luther King Commemoration and One Book One Northwestern planning committees.

DEAN OF RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL LIFE Wellesley College
Wellesley, Massachusetts
Over the past two decades Wellesley College has built a national profile in multifaith work through its Office of Religious and Spiritual Life (“ORSL”). Wellesley now seeks a visionary leader who possesses the skills and personal qualities to build on the program’s strong foundation, to enlarge its multifaith mission, and to further broaden and deepen students’ connection between intellectual life, religious and spiritual learning, and wellness in their residential campus community and beyond. The next Dean will build connections throughout Wellesley’s diverse campus community and must possess the character and charisma to be an influential voice among students, faculty, and staff.
Wellesley is a college with a storied history. It has played, and continues to play, a decisive role in shaping leadership models for women. Founded in 1870 by Pauline and Henry Durant to “offer to young women opportunities for education equivalent to those usually provided in colleges for young men,” it opened its doors in 1875 and was the first American college to have a president, faculty, and students who were all women. The College has also played a unique role in redefining the role of multifaith religious and spiritual life on college campuses. In 1993, the Wellesley College community introduced an exciting new model of religious and spiritual life that embraced multifaith religious access as a central tenant of a liberal arts education.
Reporting to the Vice President and Dean of Students, the next Dean of Religious and Spiritual Life will have the opportunity to continue Wellesley’s tradition of innovation in, and commitment to, religious and spiritual life in an increasingly diverse context. In partnership with six chaplains, the Dean will support and advise thirteen different student religious groups that are recognized by the College. The Dean will also encourage multifaith and interfaith engagement through opportunities for students of all faith and non-faith traditions to explore questions of meaning, purpose, wellness, and balance.
A search committee, chaired by Sheilah Shaw Horton, the Vice President and Dean of Students, and composed of faculty, staff, and a trustee, has been assembled to identify a new Dean of Religious and Spiritual Life. Wellesley will be assisted by the executive search firm Isaacson, Miller.
